Pip

2.5-month-old Provolone here had to have a leg amputated today, so she’s come to recover in Crazy Town. Please send her all the love you have to offer. She’s in pain and probably still loopy from anesthesia. She reminds me so much of the late Farley Eugene. I will have no problem being her mom!

Provolone isn’t the least concerned about her recent loss of limb; she got up on the first night and embraced her new life as a “tripawd.” It didn’t take her long to adjust, and she’s just as happy as she can be living in Crazy Town. But a pup this magnificent, who exudes such fortitude and grit, should not be named after a mediocre cheese, so I’m busy keeping her calm and getting to know this baby girl who has become a robust source of inspiration for me personally.

This teeny tiny (stoned) 3-legged little girl has completely stolen my heart while schooling me on life.  Yet another animal has entered my world and given me more than I could ever repay in love alone. One week ago, she was in a tough situation which led to the removal of her leg and my agreeing to take on her recovery. I brought her home just hours after surgery. I witnessed her discover that she no longer has a left front leg, and gracefully adapt, without pause, to her new life. I gave her a bully stick and instead of feeling sorry that she didn’t have a second paw to help hold it, she just used the bed to her advantage and chewed it happily and effectively. There’s a lot to be learned from Pip, which seems to be her name now; Provolone wasn’t cutting it.

Dogs have so much to teach us about how to live well — even a girl as tiny as Pip.

Pip is recovering remarkably well. Her incision looks great and she’s squealing less. She has taken up residence in the closet and prefers to share Ellen’s dinner rather than eating her own, but Ellen’s been kind and I might have to get Pip a ridiculous bowl like the big kids. Don’t ever count out a tiny dog, y’all! I adore Pip’s bold personality in tiny form. Rio is making great strides in PT. He is sitting more and he ALMOST didn’t fall over while “dropping the kids off at the park” this morning.

Rio awkwardly cozies up to Pip in her bed inside the closet.  I guess he’s over Pearl…

Little Pip is 2 weeks post-op today and she’s doing great! You should see her run!

My little Pip is having her staples removed this morning! Couldn’t decide which picture she looks cutest in, so I’m posting both. Yay Pip!!!

When Pip came home to recover, I knew it would take an exquisite family to remove her from my grasp. As she sat in my lap and I kissed her fluffy little head the same way I kissed Farley’s, and as I watched her gracefully learn to live on three limbs, I thought she might be here to stay. I just told the universe that if I am to love her forever, then I will.

But as a foster mom, I know that the more animals I adopt, the harder it is to keep caring for the ones who really need to be here. So when my longtime friend David and his beloved wife Mary wanted to meet her, I was ecstatic. I couldn’t think of anyone better suited to take care of my favorite tripawd forever.

Here she is with her new brother Angus, a chocolate lab who identifies as a small dog. It was weird not having Pip here this morning, but she had a great first night in her forever home!
